DHEA and
Pregnenolone
Two Hormones of More Importance Than Many People Know
Pregnenolone is first in the cascade of what are known as neurosteroids. All neurosteroids are derived from cholesterol and they are called neurosteroids because they all have functions in the brain.
Pregnenolone goes down 3 different pathways, one of which is its conversion to DHEA, which is converted into Testosterone, and Testosterone is then converted to Estradiol. Interestingly, DHEA has no effect on the levels of estrone or estradiol in men or women. DHEA was once thought to be the “fountain of youth” as it improves sports performance, enhances libido, promotes weight loss, and bolsters the immune system. DHEA is made in the adrenal glands mostly, but also in the brain. It starts to decline at age 30 and by 70 yr old it is almost gone. Why do some people become demented as they age? Look at their neurosteroid levels.
Symptoms of
Low DHEA:
• Fatigue
• Depression
• Decreased immune system function. 7-keto DHEA was used to treat HIV at one time
• Decreased sexual desire
• Decreased exercise tolerance and loss of muscle one
• Dry skin and dry eyes
• Decreased hair on legs, under arms and the pubic area. You can tell your levels by this symptom
• Increased vaginal dryness
What does DHEA do?
• Plays a role in preventing high blood pressure by dilating the arteries
• Enhances over 140 metabolic functions in the body
• Increases IGF-1, a growth hormone metabolite which is known as the “feel good” hormone
• Improves cognition and memory, and is neuroprotective
• When combined with Pregnenolone, Mark Gordon MD is finding it helps improve adrenal function
• In women only, DHEA helps increase testosterone levels
• In men only, DHEA decreases fat
• In men only, DHEA increases knee muscle strength and lumbar spine strength
• In women only, Low DHEA has been correlated with a higher incidence of breast cancer
DHEA is NOT recommended in the following…
• It is not recommended to give to anyone with breast, ovarian, uterine cancer, or prostate cancer
• It is also banned by NCAA and Olympic Committee because of its performance enhancement
Side Effects of DHEA – Beware! Not Everyone Metabolizes DHEA the Same
• Hair loss
• Acne
• Stomach upset
• High blood pressure
In addition, DHEA potency varies from one manufacturer to another.
I feel strongly you get DHEA from my office as I have tried a good number of them through the years and know many are not good.
