“Spirituality” by Dr. Valerie Donaldson

“Spirituality” by Dr. Valerie Donaldson

Sitting in a conference on bio-identical hormones, an older retired Ob-Gyn MD leaned over and said to me, “You know what is missing from medicine today? It’s spirituality.” I almost fell off my chair as I had been contemplating just that in the last few months more than I had in a while.

Quite honestly, spirituality is difficult to define although most people will tell you they know what it means. Wikipedia states in modern society spirituality is defined as, “(humanistic) psychology, mystical and esoteric traditions and eastern religions are being blended, to reach the true self by self-disclosure, free expression and meditation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/spirituality.

What if our illnesses are physical manifestations from “blocks” or “dents” or “missing segments” of our energetic or spiritual being? What if, in order for us to completely heal our physical bodies, we need to also heal our spirit? What if, spirit is the first thing we need to heal and physical healing follows? Is the spirit and the energetic body the same, or is the spiritual being part of the energetic being?

Ancient people 6000 years ago saw energy pathways in and around the physical body now known as the energetic bodies such as the chakras and acupuncture meridians. They developed and practiced yoga and acupuncture as a means of healing energetic defects in order to heal physical ailments. Today, these ancient practices are becoming more and more popular in western medicine and the masses. Donna Eden, who is blessed with the ability to see energy, says she has seen at least 11 energetic bodies surrounding the physical body. She teaches these energy flows today and teaches people how to heal by re-establishing and energizing these energies.

How did spirituality get left out when it has been practiced for thousands of years with success? Certainly, MD’s talk about a positive attitude helping the outcome of illnesses but to think there are spiritual defects that could affect physical defects is not even entertained. Where does a positive attitude come from? What is our mind versus our brain? Is our mind an aspect of our “spirituality”? What does conscious versus unconscious mean? Dr. Valerie Hunt wrote a fabulous book that addresses this question called, Science of the Human Vibrations of Consciousness.

In my own practice I have been using Light Portal technology, a relaxation device using color, sound and light harmonized together like a choir is in harmony, to help give people the opportunity to go to the spiritual aspect of their existence. It is akin to a deep meditation or prayer. It allows a person protected quiet, space, and time we all need and few of us have. It is a joy for me to watch people come out of the Light Portal with a different perspective of themselves and their vital need in life.
