Today I wanted to stress the importance of nutrition during this time, as nutrition is the foundation for our hormones.  Both nutrients and hormones help us fight infection and we see that again with Covid 19.  Two hormones helping us to survive exposure to Covid 19 are Estrogen and Growth hormone, in particular growth hormone metabolite IGF-1, as it has been shown to regulate acute inflammatory lung damage by viruses.

It is apparent now as it was with SARS and MERS, Men suffer more lung damage, die at a higher rate, have lower immune response, and are slower to clear the virus. The death rate in males is 2.8%, and females 1.7% across all age groups similar to SARS and MERS infections.

Part of the reason is thought to be a decreased Estrogen levels.  Whether estrogen is our own innate estrogen or bio-identical estrogen given exogenously, estrogen protects us from Covid 19 especially in the lungs as it sits on the ACE2 portal  of lung cells preventing the Covid 19 virus to enter the cell.  So off to the grocery store to help protect yourself!

Foods that Boost Estrogen:

    • Non-GMO soy and soybeans containing isoflavones
    • Strawberries, peaches, cranberries and raspberries
    • Pistachios, peanuts and walnuts
    • Dried apricots, prunes and dates
    • Organic red wine
    • Flax seeds, sesame seeds
    • Cauliflower, broccoli. Brussel sprouts and cabbage

Vitamins and Minerals that Boost Estrogen:
